Fifty hours of supervised driving, and 10 of those must be at night, so the daytime share is 40. That figure assumes you take driver education. There is a second path most people never hear about: if no driver education course is offered within 30 miles of your home and you do not want to take one online, you can skip the course, but your practice requirement doubles to 100 hours, still including 10 at night. Whoever supervises you has to be a licensed driver aged 21 or older with at least a year of driving experience, seated beside you the whole time.

Ten of your supervised hours have to be at night, and that does not change if you take the 100-hour no-driver-education path: it is 10 night hours either way. The night requirement does not apply to a motorcycle license.

The statewide driving curfew for drivers under 18 starts at 10 p.m. You can still drive to or from school or work, and you may be asked to prove that is where you were going.

The driving curfew lifts at 5 a.m. Do not confuse it with the local youth curfews Las Vegas and Reno run, which are not driving rules at all and use different hours, including a midnight cutoff on Friday and Saturday. For your first six months of licensure you cannot carry any passenger under 18 unless they are immediate family. Note what the rule actually keys on: the passenger's age, not yours, and not the number of passengers. One 17-year-old friend in the car breaks it; a carload of adults does not.
