Soft Shoulder (Work Zone)

The shoulder is unpaved or unstable; driving onto it can cause loss of traction or a rollover.

The shoulder along this stretch is unpaved, freshly graded, or otherwise too soft to support a vehicle at speed. A tire that drops onto soft material can sink, throw gravel, or pull the vehicle sideways. Stay in the travel lane, and if you must pull off, slow well below highway speed before leaving the pavement.
