Florida is a no-fault state: before registering a car you must show proof of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL) coverage, with a minimum of $10,000 in PIP and a minimum of $10,000 in PDL. Bodily-injury liability is not part of the basic required policy.

- Uninsured-motorist coverage required?
-
no
- SR-22 trigger
-
Florida uses two filings, and the one most people have heard of is not the one a DUI triggers. After a DUI conviction Florida requires the higher FR-44 limits: $100,000 for bodily injury to one person, $300,000 for bodily injury in one crash, and $50,000 for property damage, well above the ordinary $10,000 PIP and $10,000 property damage a registration needs. That proof must be kept in force for three years. The SR-22 filing covers the other cases: a license or registration suspended for failing to satisfy a judgment, for driving uninsured, or under the department’s other financial-responsibility grounds. Either way the filing is your insurer certifying coverage to FLHSMV, and letting it lapse suspends you again.
